Action!
As a teacher, I’m the type of person that loves education. Today, more than ever before, we have access to an incomprehensible amount of information thanks to the internet. Anything you could possibly want to know about is out there, at the distance of your finger tips. As someone who loves to learn however, I know that information can give you a false sense of confidence. When we learn things through reading and observing we assume we know them, that they are now a part of us. While there is a grain of truth in this, it does not nearly complete the picture. If this were absolutely true then the real professionals would be the one’s watching and reading about events rather than those actually participating. But that’s not the way things actually are. The people that are considered professionals are the ones actually out there doing the things the rest of us read about or see through video.
This website is intended to give players and coaches the information they need in order to better themselves as participants in the sport of basketball. As the saying goes, “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink”. So here I am, pointing you to the water, its up to you to drink! How much of the water you drink in from this website and how much you put it into your practice is up to you. When I teach basketball to my students I tell them often (I mean VERY often!) that if the only time they are working on the things they are learning is in class then they won’t get much better.
So what kind of commitment do you have to make in order to improve using the guidelines on this website? That’s a great question! And the answer totally depends on each person. As a general rule of thumb there is a number out there in the world of statistics: 10,000 hours. That’s a pretty daunting number for anyone. If you break that down into the time that you have available to you, it looks nearly impossible. So what does that number represent? That’s the amount of time generally accepted that it takes to become world-class in any field. If you want to be a great shooter, put in 10,000 hours. Great ballhandler, 10,000 hours, great coach, 10,000 hours. You get the idea. And this is why there are so few professionals out there. But not everyone aims for such lofty ambitions. That number is only meant to give you a guide. Maybe you just want to be good enough to make the school team, or your local club team, or maybe you just wan to get a little bit better. This website is for all of you.
As a player and now teacher and coach I have worked with all levels of ability. I have played with and against guys that went on to play in the NBA. I have coached guys that just wanted to make the local club team, and I have coached guys that have gone on to win national and international awards. I say it again, this website is for everyone. So bring yourself to the water and drink as much as you’d like, there is plenty for all participants in this amazing game!
